This is a great lapbook for a preschool boy because is is very interactive.  There are lots of things to twist, flip and fold.

The train unfolds to show the ABC’s

The tires open out so you can count them.  We numbered them with stickers so he could place them on where he wanted them.

The boat in the frame rocks on the waves.

The wheels on the bus at the top actually do “go round and round!”  LOL

The stack of cars fan out so you can see all the colors.  (My son doesn’t like to color much so he lightly drew each color on.  That’s why they all look white in the pictures.)

Inside the bus is the words to The Wheels on the Bus.  We realized that we don’t sing this song the way it was written.  We have all kinds of silly verses.  I am not sure where we got them.  But we have Baby’s who cry, Momma’s who hush them and Father’s who moan at all the noise!  LOL

This is the easiest and most important lapbook we have ever done! We were introduced to the concept of the Wordless Book when my oldest was little. The basic concept to take 5 pieces of paper black, red, white, gold and green. Each of the pieces of paper helps to explain the gift of salvation. The great thing is it does it it terms easy enough for a child to understand.

So I wanted to make a Wordless Lapbook with my 2 little ones. I am always looking for opportunities to talk with my kids about salvation and this is such a simple way of doing it that even my 4 year old can grasp the concepts. The real treasure of this lapbook is discussing all the meanings and planting the concepts in the heads of my little ones.

Inside we made a 5″ X 5″ booklet out of each color.


Inside each of the booklets we put the Bible verse that explains that color.

We also included a little ABC of Salvation Booklet.

Here is what you see when you lift the flaps. We printed the Bible verses that back up the ABC’s on the front and included them under the flaps.

All of the info we used in this lapbook is below. Please feel free to use it if you would like to make one. These would be excellent to make with a Sunday School Class, Awana group, VBS or etc.

Black = Sin

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of god.

On our own we fall short of the perfection of God. Sin, or the bad things we do, cause us to live in darkness away from God.

Red = Blood

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

It is through the sacrifice Jesus made by dying on the cross that we are saved from our sins. Because Jesus blood was spilled for us we can live for eternity with Jesus in Heaven.

White = Pure

Psalms 51:7 “ …Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow”

Jesus makes us as clean and as white as snow! If we accept Jesus as our savior God no longer sees our sins!

Yellow = Heaven

John 14:2 “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.

In heaven the streets are paved with gold! The Bible tells us Jesus is preparing a place for us in heaven to be with Him.

Green = Growth

2 Peter 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Green reminds of things that grow. Grass, trees and plants are green. They all grow when they are given the proper food, water and light. We can grow like those plants by reading God’s Word, praying and obeying God’s laws.

Here are the ABC’s of Salvation to print and include in the lapbook. One we used for the outside and the other we used inside.

We started out with the “Bee-Attitudes” write up at sermons4kids.com. I used the whole thing but then where they have “He said things like this” we changed it to “Here is what He said:” and the inserted Matthew 5: 1-12. (We removed the version they had of the Beatitudes. I copied their sermons over to a Word document and made the changes before printing it.) Then we closed with the ending they had that starts with: “You see happiness is not a feeling…”

We cut the above part into two parts so the we could make a booklet with the intro on the outside and then Matthew 5: 1-12 and closing part on the inside. You can see the booklet at the top of the picture below.

The black pockets are cut from black scrapbooking paper and glued with a glue stick. Poor, Mourn, Hunger, Gentle, Merciful, Pure, Peace & Persecuted were stamped at the top of each booklet. What we used for the booklet inside the pockets are Memory Crosses. These cool little gizmos can be purchased HERE. If you have not seen them they are SO cool!

They start out with a slit down the middle. On the front we wrote out each part of the verse from Matthew.

When you flip open the Memory Cross the first time you have another “front”. On this flap we started writing what we thought the verse meant.

Then you flip again and get a cross. We continue with our explanation.

One last flip and we wrote the end of our version of the verse. After this flip you can do it one more time and it takes you back to the start.

The Memory Crosses are pretty amazing. I have flipped them a zillion times and I still don’t know how they make them! You can go to their website for a better demonstration on how they work and to order a free sample of the product.

Now, back to the lapbook…

The kids and I wrote out an easier to understand version for each of the cards. We spent some time discussing each one and talking about what we thought they meant. I used the version that we had cut out of the “Bee-Attitude” sermon above as a guideline for our discussion then we wrote the following in each of the booklets. (Again using the part we had cut out as a guideline of what to write in the booklets.)

Poor Front:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matt 5:3
Poor Inside:
“Bee” happy when things don’t go your way…because then you will find…that the things that are really valuable are in Heaven.

Mourn Front:
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matt 5:4
Mourn Inside:
“Bee” happy even when you lose things you love…because then you will be…comforted by God.

Gentle Front:
Blessed are the gentle. for they shall inherit the earth. Matt 5:5
Gentle Inside:
“Bee” satisfied with your life…because then you will find…that God provides all you need.

Hunger Front:
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Matt 5:6
Hunger Inside:
“Bee” happy when you really need God…for then…God will come and satisfy you.

Merciful Front:
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Matt 5:7
Merciful Inside:
“Bee” happy when you help others…because in caring for them you will find…that God will care for you.

Pure Front:
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Matt 5:8
Pure Inside:
“Bee” happy when your heart is right with God…because it is then that you will see…that God is at work all around you.

Peace Front:
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God. Matt. 5:9
Peace Inside:
“Bee” happy when you get along with others…because it is then that you will know…that peace comes from being part of God’s family.

Persecuted Front:
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Matt 5:10
Persecuted Inside:
Be happy when others treat you badly…because you follow Jesus…Your reward will be great in heaven.

This lapbook had all kinds of new technics for us in it. It was the first one we have used the Memory Crosses in, the first we have used stamps in and the first we had used a template to make lines in to write on.

I got this template at a Scrapbooking Convention awhile back and it is GREAT for lapbooking! I can use it to draw lines in the kids booklets so they can not only write straight, but can also get an idea of how much space I want them to fill. (My 13 year old thinks that less is more! LOL)

Folder #1 is all info about the Song.
On the left is the song with all the words. Middle is each item from the song and inside what Biblical item it represents. Left tells the legend of the song.

Folder #2 covers the Biblical meanings of 1 -5
These booklets cover: Jesus, The 2 parts of the Bible -Old and New Testament, The 3 Theological Virtues, and the Four Gospels.

Folder #3 covers 6-9
These booklets cover: The 6 days of Creation, 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit. 7 Bee-Attitudes, 9 Fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Folder #4 covers 10 -12.
These booklets cover: The 10 Commandments, 11 Faithful Apostles and the 12 points of the Apostles Creed.

We could have put it together with less folders, but I liked laying it out so that the booklets are pretty much in order. This is going to be such a nice tool to go back and review so many things about the Bible! I know we will be returning to it again and again! (Oh and this lapbook was extra fun because my rent-a-kid was able to do it with us!)

I found this lapbook to be excellent for starting point for dicussions on finance with my son. He did the lapbook on his own for the most part, but we spent a lot of time discussing what he was learning. There were several things he had not been exposed to much before like info. on the Stock Market and Taxes. (Ah, to be a kid again! LOL)

This was an excellent teaching tool. I really liked it because to complete the booklets he had to do research since it didn’t give him the “right” answers. The best part about it is that it was FREE over at Homeschool Helper.

The 5 senses booklet – A booklet about what the 5 senses are.

One of the things I love about lapbooking is how the kids don’t think of it as “school”. While we were working on this one a neighbor stopped by and she said “Oh, am I interrupting school?” before I could say anything my 3 year old said “No, we are just making a lapbook!” Then he tried to drag me back to the table to get back to work the whole time I was talking to her! LOL I like enthusiasm like that for school!

Now he wants to make a Spiderman lapbook! LOL I am thinking maybe I can make it into a Spiderman counting and ABC lapbook? I will let you know what I come up with! (All ideas, links and suggestions regarding the Spiderman theme would be appreciated!) LOL

So, yesterday I actually sat down one on one with JUST my 3 year old and here is what we did!

Front cover:
We changed the cover for ours from the recommended one. I wanted to incorporate his hand print, and he wanted it on the cover.

Inside Left Folder:
In this folder we have the Book About Me, He’s Got the Whole World flip up globe, a song about creation and a mini book about creation.

Inside Right Folder:
These booklets cover each of the 7 days of creation. When you lift up the number the picture of what was created each day is underneath. On the right is a creation poem. On the left is a self portrait. LOL

Proud Lapbooker!
I doubt there was ever a lapbook that was more loved! LOL

This was really fun and easy to do. I don’t think we did all the things offered at the website, but that is only because he is 3. I didn’t want to overwhelm him with his first solo lapbook! He learned about Creation, counting & letters in this lapbook. He also used his fine motor skills coloring and pasting. (And of course there was singing! There is singing in all our lapbooks. LOL We cut and we sing!) I liked that it has little book about me, which will make this a a nice keepsake of his preschool days. (If it doesn’t get destroyed because he LOVES it so much! LOL)

Oh, and the timing was perfect! He is learning about Creation at Awana right now and he can’t wait to take his lapbook to show his leaders!

Folder#1
In this folder we have:

Code of Chivalry – To be fair to all people. To protect the weak. To be generous. To honor and respect women.

When Were the Middle Ages – The Middle ages began about 450 A.D. They lasted for over 1000 years. This period is called the Middle Ages because it was between ancient and modern times.

Why are the Middle Ages Sometimes Called Medieval Times? – Because Medieval is Latin for Middle.

Becoming a Knight – 1. At 7 years old a boy would go to live in another Castle and become a page. 2. At 14 years old he would become a Squire. The Squire took care of all the horses. 3. At 21 years old He could become a Knight. A Dubbing ceremony would be performed by the Knights Father, another Knight or the King.

The Feast - They ate peacocks! They ate ducks with gold painted bills! They ate on pieces of bread called trenchers. They ate with their hands and would wipe their hands on the dogs!

Market Days & Trade Fairs – Market Days happened once a week. people bought clothes, food and other goods. Trade Fairs happened once or twice a year. Merchants came from around the world and sold all different items. The trade fair had lots of entertainment too!

Lords & Ladies – to become a Lord or Lady you had to be born rich or born into a noble family. A person not born into a noble family could never become noble.

Folder #2
In this folder we have:

Battles & Sieges – Knights went to war for many reasons. Some of them were to get more land, to protect the Lord’s land, religious wars and to protect the castle. A siege happened when someone come and attacked the castle.

The Dungeon – A prison in the basement of the castle.

Weapons – A Knights most important weapon was his sword. Lances were very long and they used them when they were charging on horses. Other weapons were called Flail, mace, Battle-Ax & War Hammer. A shield was carried to protect the Knight from others weapons!

Armour – 1. Chain mail was the 1st Armour. It was made from small rings. 2. Later they started covering the chain mail with sheets of steel. 3. Horses also wore armour! 4. A Knight’s helmet weighed as much as a 5 year old! (Around 40 pounds!)

Coat of Arms - This is the only thing we salvaged from the 1st attempt! You can find out what she wrote in this one HERE.

Folder #3
In this folder we have:

Religion – Religion was an important part of daily life. Most castles had a chapel and a priest. The Lord and Lady would go to chapel every morning. (We also discussed a lot more about religion during the Middle Ages, but we kept our booklet simple.)

How to Become A Master Craftsman – 1. Become an Apprentice 0 Run errands, learn skills, work without pay. 2. After about 7 years you could become a Journeyman. Practice your skills and get low pay.3. Make a Masterpiece and show it to a guild of other Master Craftsmen. 4. Once your work passed the guilds inspection you became a Master Craftsmen.

Festivals & Fairs – These happened to celebrate religious Holidays. Feasts were given. The townspeople would act out stories from the Bible in plays on the streets.

Knights – Knights were the soldiers of the Middle Ages.

Castle Life – It could take over 1000 people and 20 years to build a castle. The Lords and Ladies usually married at around 14 years old. At 7 years old children were sent to live in another castle to be trained for the future. For fun they played chess, sang songs and played musical instruments. they also kept Falcons for hunting!

End of the Age – People didn’t want to live in castles anymore. They were dark, cold, dirty and built for safety. Cannons and guns were invented and made the Knights armor useless. Even the walls of the castle could not stand up to cannon fire! Kings bean to train armies for protections. People can still be Knighted today! Now it is an honor a King can bestow.

This is a printout of a Knight found online. We used a drawing in the book to label all the parts of his armor.

All of the booklets for this lapbook were created in DogByte Creative Photo Albums Deluxe. This lapbook was really easy to do because we got all the answers from The Magic Tree House Research Guide-Knights & Castles. Basically what I did was went through the book and made a list of all the booklets I would like to make and were the answers were found in the book. Then as I read her each part of the book she would color that booklet. then I would have her “tell back” what she wanted in the booklets and I would write in them for her. (Shes only 6 so she can’t write that well yet.) I don’t think she would have sat through me just reading this book aloud to her. But since we were just reading a few pages and then stopping to discuss it and write things in the booklet she loved it!

We learned a lot doing this lapbook! Not the least of which was NOT to leave crayons out where the 3 year old can get them and use them for evil!!! LOL

This is the cover. The picture was colored by my 3 year old.
Make sure to notice the spine of the lapbook! YEP, that is DUCT TAPE! LOL I have been trying to come up with some different ways of connecting our folders. I really like to sew them. But, I find when I show lapbooks to other Mom’s they will often say “Oh, I don’t have a sewing machine. We can’t do this.” Well even though I explain to them that I am probably the only lapbooker out there that sews our folders (LOL) they still look doubtful. Sooooo, enter Duct Tape! After blogging about how nicely it binds paper booklets I thought I would give it a try. It worked great and I am thrilled to bring two of my passions together! Lapbooking and Duct Tape! (Yeah, I know I am weird!)

Inside left folder. Picture of flying dino my daughter drew, booklets on Plant Eaters and Meat Eaters. Label the Dinosaur Booklet. (This was a little worksheet that had pics of dinos and then gave descriptions of them. read the descriptions then the kids had to figure out which one was being described.) (Logic skills!)

In the Plant Eaters/Meat Eaters booklets we colored pictures of different dinos and then decided which went in which booklet. Then we put info on each type of diet in the top of the booklet. The dino pics are just stapled together and then the bottom one is glued down.
My 6 year old can really write better than this. Sigh…She was being lazy & ornery!

Inside the How Big Is a Dino booklet we had a little quiz that told how big a car and a bus are. Then you were told in feet how long each dino was. We had to figure out if they equaled 1, 2 or 3 buses/cars or less. (Math skills!)
