The 5 W's of Journalism
Children can work on
learning about the 5 W's that
can be helpful in tracking
stories and write them in this
accordion notebook.
Interview Questions
If you have the means and opportunity to have you're
child interview someone who has lived through the
Great Depression, this is a great starting place for
questions they can ask, and has a place for them to
record answers.  Help children come up with additional
questions as well.
HOBO Signs
During the depression people used "HOBO" signs to
keep track of different areas of town, and to let other
travelers know what they could expect at different houses.
Kit's friends tell her about the HOBO signs so that she
learns to read some important signs along her journeys.
Visit this website and print up this example set of signs
that were used during the depression.  Have you child
pick a few that they like and copy them on the flaps, writing
the meaning on the back.
Life Changes
Kits family went through many
life changes because of the
depression.  This is a Layer
book children can write about
how each family member was
affected, and how the
community was affected.
This page is full of resources you can use to make
your
Kit Kittredge Lapbook. For Photos of this
lapbook put together please visit our
Free Member
Forum.  This lapbook is geared towards early
elementary children, but if you have older children
you could use the resources as a starting point on
what to include in your lapbook.
We based this
lapbook on the Movie "Kit Kittredge: An
American Girl"
and not the American Girl books so
keep that in mind :)
  • Who is Kit Kittredge?
  • What is a Depression?
  • How were people effected?
  • Who were the other characters?
  • What does it mean to be a journalist?
We based our lapbook off the Kit Kittredge: An American Girl movie.  After renting it my daughter was
fascinated by the thought of being a detective/reporter and solving a mystery....so I just had to make
this lapbook activity for her.  We haven't read any of the original books on Kit, so I'm not exactly sure
how exactly the books and the movie line up.
Make a  Reporter Journal from a Composition Notebook

This is a fantastic way to make a your very own Reporter Journal.  We made these a while back for a
special homeschool project, and my daughter loves having her own special book to jot down all her notes
in.  You might use this Journal to conduct family interviews, notes on weather, neighborhood happenings
and brainstorming story ideas.
You can see a picture of the journal we made here.
Adopting a Pet
Kit comes across a dog whose owner cannot afford to
feed it anymore and is offering it free to anyone who can
care for her.  Kit convinces her mother to adopt this dog,
and it's a great time to talk with children about the word
"Adoption", why it's sometimes necessary and how it can
help those in need.
Bible Verse Copywork
Older children can practice handwriting skills with
these bible verse copywork sheets.  This is also the
Verses from 1 John 3:17-18, and if you fold this up it
will store in the Bible Verse pocket above.
Traveling Library
One of the boarders that rents a room at Kit's house is a
traveling librarian.  I can remember the "Bookmobile"
visiting my school when I was younger, but I think it's quite
a forgotten trade for todays children.  Use this pocket to
store "Library Cards" about your child's favorite books,
have them draw a picture of their favorite part of the story,
and then rate the book 1-5 stars by coloring them in.

Wants vs. Needs Minibook
Learning about the depression is a great time to help
children understand the relationship between Wants
and Needs.  Help children list out a few of them in this
minibook.
The Boarders.....
This is a Cycle book that
you can use to write in the
names of the boarders that
were staying at Kit's house.
Kit Kittredge Lapbook Cover

Friends & Lock Box
Minibooks
These are minibooks where
children can write down the
names of Kit's friends and details
about her special treehouse club.
There is also a minibook about
her Mother's lock box, where
children can write what went into
the box and why.
How Can I Help?
This is a Triangle Petal Book
for children to brainstorm
ways they can help impact
their community.
Bible Verse Card
Children can memorize the
verse from 1 John 3:17-18,
and keep this handy card as
a reminder.  For each time
they repeat it back to you
allow them to put a sticker on
the back of the card.  Younger
children can earn stickers for
portions of the verses.
Basic Facts & Vocab
This is a minibook where
children can write basic facts
about Kit Kittredge.
There is also a small book for
the vocabulary word:
Sacrifice.  Children can write
what sacrifice means, how
Kit's family displayed it, and
how God have sacrificed for
us as well.
Lapbook Clipart
Here are some various
images that you can use to
decorate you're lapbook.  Let
children cut out and glue in
various open spots in the
lapbook to give it a more
appealing look.
